Literature Text

“Sift together flour, baking soda, salt and sugar.” The recipe said.

Luc stared blankly at the page. What the hell does ‘sift’ mean? He questioned. April had put him in charge of making a dessert for an upcoming block party. He had chosen some random recipe online that sounded simple enough, a chocolate cake, but this looked way more complicated than he had originally thought.

Unable to figure out what ‘sifting’ meant, Luc just threw in all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and began to stir vigorously. This is a lot tougher than it thought it would be, Luc thought, his arm beginning to fatigue from the stirring. Luc dipped his finger into the bowl and tasted the lumpy batter. Not bad.

A loud tapping noise sounded from the back door. Confused, Luc left the messy kitchen and to the door. The moment he opened it, a bird swept past his head and into the house. “Hey!” Luc chased after the bird into the kitchen. In a panic, the bird accidentally knocked over the box of salt sitting above the batter. Salt flowed into the batter relentlessly; Luc was too absorbed in the bird to realize the issue.

When Luc finally returned to the cake batter, he immediately poured it into a pan and into the oven, unaware of the surplus of salt added to his cake.

“Thanks for making the cake, Luc!” April praised. She observed the slightly lopsided and badly frosted cake and forced a smile, “It…looks great!”

Luc shrugged, “No problem.” He turned and started towards the front door.

“Where are you going? The block party is going to start soon.” April questioned.

“I’m out of salt.” Luc replied.
